FAQs

Q: What is Limoges? (The "s" is silent)
A: Limoges is a town in France that is known for its production of fine white porcelain. The name "Limoges" is now synonymous with the porcelain itself. Porcelain imported from the manufacturers in France bear the stamp "Limoges France." Of particular interest among today’s collectors are the tiny brass-hinged boxes reminiscent of the days of King Louis XV of France when the boxes were used to hold snuff.

Q: What is Louisiana Limoges™?
A: Louisiana Limoges™ is the trademarked name for the Limoges porcelain (mostly boxes) designed and handpainted by Marty Ayo of M. Ayo Porcelain. These boxes are French imports stamped with the Limoges France authentication. However, each box is a unique handpainted design rather than the mass-produced boxes painted at the factories and found in most retail establishments and mail order catalogs.

Q: What is enameling?
A: The use of enamel (a type of china paint that is thick and applied in high relief) produces shiny, textured sprays of tiny flowers, leaves, scrolls, and dots. Special glass enamels are used to create elaborate designs on glass and bisque (unglazed porcelain).

Q: How many of each item do you offer for sale?
A: Only one; however a similar piece may be commissioned. See Commissions web page.

Q. What happens if I place an order for an item that is no longer available?
A. Because the items for sale are one-of-a-kind, this could happen. You will be notified right away by e-mail of the non-availability. At that point you may decide to commission a similar piece, or select an alternate item, or cancel your order. No charge will be made unless we hear from you.

Q: How long does it take to have a special commission painted?
A: Generally, three to four weeks. However, other factors may extend this time frame. For example, the availability of the piece of porcelain, the size, the intricacy of design, and any other special requirements, may add to the length of time needed for completion. If an item is needed for a certain date, every effort will be made to meet the deadline. A nominal fee will be added for rush orders.

Q: How are your porcelain tiles framed?
A: All porcelain tiles are professionally framed by Mel's Frame Gallery of Raceland, Louisiana. The tile is glued to the mat with a heavy-duty adhesive and framed without glass, so that the thickness of the tile is apparent. The matting and framing not only enhance the size of the art work, but the tile becomes suitable for hanging on a wall.
